New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel didn't need to say much after announcing that the team would be without cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills.
His face said it all.
"Well, again, that is just what the situation is," Vrabel told reporters on Friday, via Patriots Wire's Sophie Weller. "There’s nothing we can do about it. We can make sure that the guys that are playing are ready and that we continue to do the things that we know are going to help us. But that happens every week in the National Football League. I’m looking forward to seeing the guys that are going to play in there."
The injuries will be tough to overcome on the road against the Josh Allen-led Bills.
Buffalo's offense leads the NFL with an average of 33.7 points per game. They also have the fourth-ranked rushing offense with the combination of Allen and running back James Cook. Not having Barmore along the defensive front is a huge loss for the Patriots.
And Gonzalez is one of the NFL's best defensive backs. His absence removes a legitimate lockdown cornerback from the equation.
Players like Charles Woods and rookie Karon Prunty will have opportunities to step up on the backend. Meanwhile, the defensive front could use elevated efforts from Milton Williams and Cory Durden, along with a big showing from some of the reserve options, including Joshua Farmer, DaQuan Jones and Leonard Taylor.
