FOXBOROUGH, Mass — Greatness recognizes greatness.
And that's the case when it comes to Stephon Gilmore and Christian Gonzalez as they have certainly cemented themselves as two of the best cornerbacks in New England Patriots history.
On Friday, Gilmore returned to Foxborough to sign a one-day contract, officially retiring as a member of the Patriots. And Gonzalez had high praise for Gilmore, whose impressive career included a Super Bowl victory as well as being named the first player in franchise history to be named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.
"I mean, he's a great guy," Gonzalez told Patriots Wire. "Somebody that's amazing to have in my corner. I know I can talk to him about football, life, anything. He always reaches out," Gonzalez said.
"We've caught up. We've talked. And I'm happy for him. I'm glad he got to get in, make his plays, do what he does, do what he did, and now he gets to enjoy retirement and do it with his family."
Gilmore shared similar sentiments about the young defender.
"He's very super kind of quiet, kind of like I was," he said. "He's a great talent. He's fast. He's got good size too for a corner, and I think he's gonna have a great career. I just told him just to, no matter what, stay hungry because, no matter what you did last year, you gotta prove yourself each and every year, and that's what the great players do.
"So I'm just looking forward to see how he you know keep getting better."
