New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is expected to play in Wednesday's season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

The quarterback sat out the entire 2026 preseason with the team aiming to get a better look at some of the depth pieces. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel also didn't want to risk the starters getting injured in an exhibition game.

Maye has not played since the Super Bowl LX matchup against the Seattle Seahawks back in February. However, he has shown real glimpses of growth through training camp and joint practices against the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles.

Last season, Maye threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also added 450 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He was the runner-up

for the 2025 NFL MVP award behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Patriots will need all hands on deck for Wednesday's showdown with the defending Super Bowl champions. Maye's health was never really in doubt, but he might need to shake off some rust as the Patriots look to get back to the Super Bowl.
