Trevor Lawrence choosing to kneel at the one-yard line with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter told you everything you needed to know about the New England Patriots' 35-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It was an absolute disaster.
The train wreck could be seen coming a mile away when Patriots quarterback Drake Maye dropped back and inexplicably fumbled the ball with no defenders around in the first half. After the play, Maye looked down at his hands, wondering what happened.
That's no surprise because everybody watching was wondering the same thing. Little did they know that the runner-up for the 2025 NFL MVP award would give them plenty more to worry about in the game.
The 24-year-old gunslinger had a chance to stop the bleeding near the end
of the first half, but he made a bad decision and threw an interception while targeting Efton Chism III. He then threw another interception late in the third quarter, which had some wondering whether Mike Vrabel would consider benching him.
So far through three games, Maye has thrown one touchdown pass and six interceptions. It has been one of the most shocking meltdowns by a young quarterback that has been seen in years.
With that said, the Patriots haven't done much to help him by trading away Kayshon Boutte and cutting Stefon Diggs. The Romeo Doubs experiment hasn't worked out, and A.J. Brown, who is currently on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain, isn't coming to save the team anytime soon.
As for the defense, they played well enough to win the football game, despite being down two starting edge rushers and a starting safety. By the end of the game, they looked straight-up demoralized and deflated. And who could blame them after watching the offense throw up on itself for three straight weeks?
The team is banged up on both sides of the ball and led by a young quarterback lacking confidence—exactly what nobody wants to hear ahead of an upcoming Week 4 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
