New England Patriots wide receiver Efton Chism admitted the "biggest blessings" in his career came when he was paired with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and receivers coach Todd Downing.
The former undrafted free agent out of Eastern Washington turned heads with the two key receptions that he had in last week's win over the Buffalo Bills. Both of those plays came on the game-winning drive, including a 23-yard one-handed touchdown reception.
But anyone that follows the Patriots knows that Chism has been making plays like that since he arrived in New England in 2025. That play against the Bills was simply the first time that he did it on the big stage.
“I mean, probably one of the biggest blessings in my career so far is being able to work
with [McDaniels], and [Todd Downing], and just our room in general," Chism told Julian Edelman on the Gronk & Jules Show. "It's so much tape out there of you and everyone that's played in this system. It’s so beneficial for us just to learn and to see not just a drawing of how he wants to run a play.
"He’s got evidence and tape of it so we can go and watch. ...Coach McDaniels is one of the smartest football coaches I’ve been around. Getting to learn from him every day has been a huge blessing, and I love him as a coach, so it’s been awesome, man.”
The Patriots will depend on Chism and others to step up and make more plays on Sunday, when they host the Las Vegas Raiders at Gillette Stadium.
A.J. Brown is still on injured reserve, and Mack Hollins has been ruled out of the game with the calf injury he suffered against the Bills. For the first time in his NFL career, Chism is going into a regular season game knowing that he could see significant reps on the field.
All eyes will be on Foxborough to see what he does with his next opportunity.
