The New England Patriots enter Week 3 with reason to trust their man coverage-heavy defense against Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington, despite his level of play this season posing a threat to their ability to win one-on-one matchups.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Patriots employ a man coverage rate of 46 percent, but Washington has been productive against the coverage scheme, to say the least, averaging 7.71 yards per reception against man.
New England has leaned on tight individual coverage early this season, using man coverage to challenge opposing receivers at the line of scrimmage and force quarterbacks into contested throws. Christian Gonzalez has led the way for the Patriots at the cornerback slot, and he and his teammates
have a recipe for limiting Washington’s productivity in Week 3.
Washington is one of the focal points of the Jaguars’ offense. He has recorded 181 receiving yards on 12 receptions with a touchdown on the season. Washington is on pace to have a career year in 2026 to the tune of 1,538 receiving yards, if he plays in all 17 games of the season and sustains his average yardage throughout. The Patriots will likely use physical coverage, various leverages and safety help to prevent him from having a big day on the stat sheet.
New England’s corners, led by Gonzalez, will need to play at a high level to contain Washington. Patriots defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr has orchestrated a defense that has the star power and work rate to make life difficult for Washington in man coverage, despite his previous success against those looks, giving the team confidence for the challenge ahead in Week 3.
