New England Patriots special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer praised rookie linebacker Namdi Obiazor before a team practice this week.
According to Patriots Wire’s Sophie Weller, Springer expressed to reporters on Thursday the approach and execution that Obiazor has led with to begin the season.
“He’s doing everything a pro should do,” Springer said.
Obiazor has recorded five total tackles on the season for the Patriots, which is tied for the second-most in the NFL. He has also logged 40 special teams snaps on the year thus far.
The way in which Obiazor has led is the type of approach that earns rookies playing time. He currently plays behind Patriots starters Christian Elliss and Robert Spillane at the linebacker position in New England. However,
with consistent production in special teams, as well as sound play when his number is called, he will put himself in position to vie for a larger role on the team.
Obiazor’s progress does not guarantee him a larger role on the defense immediately, but it gives him a foundation to build on. For now, the Patriots’ Week 3 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars awaits. That will present him with his next opportunity to translate the work he’s put in outside of game-day action on the field when it is time.
