New England Patriots center Jared Wilson offered a response to quarterback Drake Maye’s explanation for his first-quarter fumble in Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Everyone questioned what happened when Maye dropped back to throw, and the ball somehow slipped out of his hands without contact from a defender. When asked about the fumble after the game, Maye claimed that Wilson was bleeding, and some of his blood got on the ball before the play, ultimately causing it to slip from his grasp.
He did take responsibility, saying he should have held on to the ball regardless.
When asked about Maye's comments, Wilson admitted that he was bleeding during the game, which he said was common for a center not wearing a glove.
“I just got cut
up. I have no idea when it happened,” Wilson said, via MassLive's Mark Daniels. “Drake was like, ‘Jared, blood.’ I was like, ‘Oh, I got you, I’ll fix it.’ That’s pretty much how it goes.
“I have no idea what happened. I don’t know if this happened after or before [the fumble]. I really don’t know. Honestly. I just see it and get it fixed as fast as possible. They put some brown stuff on it to like kind of stop the bleeding and they just wrap it up and it’s fine. It’s like a 10-second process - tape it up. Done.”

"Part of being a center. I’m pretty sure you ask anybody, any center in the league that doesn’t wear a glove, you get cut up." https://t.co/uniQXv57FH
Whatever the case might be, the fumble was a microcosm of a frustrating day overall for New England.
The offense struggled for a third straight week, and Maye turned the ball over three times, including a fumble and two interceptions. Ultimately, the Patriots were blown out on the road by the Jaguars in a 35-6 loss. They are now sitting at 1-2 with an AFC East showdown against the Josh Allen-led Buffalo Bills next on the schedule.
