Given all of the other moves the New England Patriots have made, rookie tight end Eli Raridon initially felt somewhat like an afterthought.
The Patriots already had a No. 1 tight end in Hunter Henry, and the likelihood of the rookie contributing right away was viewed as slim. And yet, Raridon has been one of the more impressive young playmakers through the first six training camp practices.
Quarterback Drake Maye and backup Tommy DeVito were both singing the former Notre Dame standout's praises after Friday's practice, where Raridon scored multiple touchdowns. DeVito noted Raridon's "size and athleticism" as two of the more impressive traits that he brings to the table.
"Have you seen him? He's a big target. I bet you'd throw to him too," DeVito
said, via Patriots Wire's Sophie Weller.
Maye has been equally impressed. He noted Raridon's intelligence and willingness to put in the work as quality traits that he's noticed in the young tight end.
“He’s a big dude, first off, that can run. I mean, that’s pretty cool, and he’s smart,” Maye said, via Boston Herald's Doug Kyed.
Raridon was productive at the collegiate level, recording 48 catches for 623 yards and three touchdowns in four seasons at Notre Dame. This included a career-high senior season that saw him tally 32 catches for 482 yards.
Although Raridon may take on bigger roles in the future, the Patriots' lack of tight end depth should create an opportunity for him to contribute right away.
