New England Patriots kicker Andy Borregales capitalized on the opportunity to change his jersey number to one that is all too familiar to him ahead of the start of the 2026 NFL season.
According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Borregales stated to the media on Sunday that the reason behind him switching his jersey number to No. 8 stems from his childhood playing football.
"It was the first number I ever wore when I started playing football at 5 years old,” Borregales said. “I kind of waited until the end; if anyone was going to get it, go get it. I saw that it was still available and here we are."
Borregales wore No. 36 last season as a rookie for the Patriots. He played well on the season, having converted 27-of-32 field goals and 53-of-55 extra point attempts,
while helping New England reach the Super Bowl at the end of the season.
The 23-year-old Borregales also wore No. 30 at Miami prior to entering the NFL, but he will now play in No. 8 in his second season in the league, as the Patriots look to contend for the Super Bowl once again.
