The New England Patriots had defensive backs Darren Hall and Malik Spencer in for free-agent workouts, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, as the team prepares for Week 3.
The Patriots are dealing with injuries in their defensive backfield following their 20-3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. Starting safety Craig Woodson is dealing with a shoulder injury, and Dell Pettus has an injured ankle, prompting New England to explore available players to provide help in the secondary.
Hall has played four seasons in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons (2021-22) and Arizona Cardinals (2024-25). The veteran defensive back has appeared in 48 games, including 12 starts in his career, and has a sack, a forced fumble and six passes defensed to show for.
Spencer has yet to play a game in the NFL. The former Michigan State defensive back entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2026 with the Washington Commanders. He offers youth and upside to New England as he attempts to earn another NFL opportunity on the team’s roster.
New England has a matchup against Trevor Lawerence and the Jacksonville Jaguars coming up in Week 3. The Patriots will be on the road for the affair, as they look to improve to 2-1 on the season.
