NFL great and former New England Patriots superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski has sided with Drake Maye over Caleb Williams in the debate over who the better young quarterback is.
When appearing on Kay Adams' Up & Adams Show, Gronkowski backed the New England signal-caller following his recent string of resurgent play in the last three weeks.
Maye has rebounded from an interception-heavy opening three weeks to deliver fringe MVP-level performances from Weeks 4-6. Through six games in 2026, Maye has thrown for 1,463 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. After struggling greatly with turnovers early, he has demonstrated improved decision-making and greater consistency, strengthening his case as being one of the league’s top quarterbacks.
On the other hand, Williams has missed three games this season due to injury, but he leads the league in completion rate at 72.5 percent. He has also recorded 712 passing yards and three passing touchdowns this year. The body of work that both he and Maye have put forth this season stands toe-to-toe, though Williams’ efficiency stands out far more than Maye’s.
However, Maye holds an advantage in recent accomplishments. He was a second-team All-Pro last season and led the Patriots to the Super Bowl. Williams was not an All-Pro and led the Bears to the NFC Divisional Round in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams, leaving Maye with the stronger résumé as things currently stand.
Williams, however, has time to respond for the rest of the season. His remaining schedule offers opportunities to close the gap, while Maye faces a challenging slate of his own. With substantial football remaining, both quarterbacks will have ample opportunities to still influence the debate.
