New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was reminded of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce when recently recollecting Efton Chism’s highlight lateral play in the second quarter of the team’s 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5.
Speaking on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Vrabel joked that Chism was “acting like Kelce” after the creative trick play helped the team convert a 3rd-and-11 situation into a first down during Sunday’s victory.
“He’s just acting like Kelce,” Vrabel said when asked if the play was designed or if Chism was free-styling with the decision. “He’s just making [expletive] up as he goes. Like, ‘This is what we’re gonna do now Chis? We’re just gonna go rogue?’”
The play began with quarterback Drake Maye throwing a short
pass to Chism, who quickly lateraled the ball to running back TreVeyon Henderson. Henderson secured the pass and advanced the ball, giving New England a successful conversion on a critical third down.
Vrabel’s comparison to Kelce added a humorous touch to the discussion of a play that showcased the Patriots’ creativity and ability to get multiple offensive players involved. The sequence also highlighted Chism’s awareness and willingness to make a play under pressure.
New England secured the win with Chism having recorded 57 receiving yards on the game. The trick play provided one of the game’s most memorable moments and helped the team improve to 3-2 on the season after the win.
