SEATTLE, Washington — While the game was nothing to be celebrated, there was some good news out of Seattle this week, and it was that the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez agreed on a record-breaking contract extension.
Gonzalez is now the highest-paid cornerback in the league, having signed a four-year, $135 million extension.
It was unclear for the week leading up to the trip whether the deal would get done, with the cornerback telling Patriots Wire he wasn't sure when asked about his confidence level in the deal getting done. But, they came to an agreement, with the Patriots even sharing a photo of him signing the deal as well as shaking hands with Eliot Wolf.
And after the game, Gonzalez took a moment to react to what this means to him.
"I'm extremely blessed and thankful," he said. "I love the team. I love Boston. I love the city. This is where I want to be. So I'm happy to be here and glad we're able to get it done, and we're on to the season."
"It was definitely a relief," the cornerback added regarding his feelings on getting the deal done before the season. "It was nice. A nice feeling, but it was right on to Seattle, to this game. Just being ready to come out here and do what I got to do for this team and do my role, play my role."
Before the game, head coach Mike Vrabel also spoke about the extension during his interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Scott Zolak.
“Hope it’s more than just a couple,” Vrabel said. “But it feels great. I’m happy for the player; I’m happy for the team and the organization. He’s a good foundational piece that we can build around. We want to draft well and retain our premium players.”
