FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – For Friday's scrimmage, New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel set two clear rules for the coaching staff ahead of the selection of players for each team.
One was that Drake Maye had to be on the same team as starting center Jared Wilson, as the two continue to build chemistry heading into the season. As for the second one, this is where Vrabel had some fun, saying that Mack Hollins and Efton Chism are a package deal.
The two became very close last year, which was Hollins' first year with New England, while it was Chism's first year in the league, having signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent. And with that, he impressed, earning a spot on the active roster after training camp.
This rule drew a large laugh
from those in the room and put an immediate smile on Vrabel's face as he said it. So, what makes their relationship so special?
"I mean, it's unbelievable," Vrabel detailed. "I mean, you come in there, and they're in the pool, the rehab pool, and they're playing like pool games. It's like summer camp. They're throwing stuff and got goggles on, and they swim down and pick up things on the bottom of the pool. They study all the time. They work out. They train. They compete. They push each other. It's a really cool thing to see.
"A guy that had been in this league a long time, played with a couple different teams and a kid from Western Washington, a small school, and they come together, and I think they both help each other."
