New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez plans for the team’s defense to help its offense in Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills by creating turnovers and, if possible, turning them directly into points.
Facing superstar quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills presents a demanding challenge for a New England unit that will be tasked with limiting the most potent offense in the NFL, capable of playing brilliantly through the air and on the ground.
Unfortunately, Gonzalez won't be on the field to help the unit on Sunday, as both he and defensive tackle Christian Barmore have been ruled out with injuries.
Before the injury news, in an interview with Patriots Wire's Jordy McElroy, Gonzalez stated that takeaways and defensive scores will be among
the best ways for New England’s defense to uphold its responsibilities in the upcoming game against the Bills and give their offense a lot to work with.
“I mean, we can definitely just turn the ball over, get turnovers, get it back to the offense,” Gonzalez said. “I mean, even better to score. Score when we get turnovers and we get picks and we get fumbles. Score, that will help the team, that will help everybody.
“That would put points on the board. So I mean, just doing what we got to do, go out there and contain Josh and that run game and that pass game. Everybody know what Josh brings, so it’s a challenge that we look forward to always seeing them two times a year. So it’s the first one, so we’re excited for it.”
Through three games, New England has played well against the pass, allowing 510 passing yards and four passing touchdowns to opponents.
New England has also allowed 325 rushing yards this year and will face a Bills offense that has piled on points to begin the season, with James Cook in the hunt to win his second straight rushing title, Josh Allen playing like an MVP, and Dalton Kincaid being one of the best pass-catchers in the NFL early. Contributions from DJ Moore and Khalil Shakir have also helped Buffalo lead a high-octane offense to begin the season.
By executing on the game plan and objectives for the matchup, the Patriots’ defense will help to give the team’s offense more time on the field and chances to gain a rhythm after a slow start to the year.
