The New England Patriots reportedly released undrafted rookie wide receivers Kyle Dixon and Cameron Dorner, according to Patriots.com's Evan Lazar on Saturday.
Dixon led the Patriots with eight receptions for 71 yards in Thursday's preseason finale loss to the Cleveland Browns
. The Patriots clearly liked him a lot considering he signed a deal with the team as an undrafted rookie with $252,000 in guaranteed money.He would be an immediate candidate for the practice squad, assuming he clears waivers.
Dorner showed up multiple times as having real potential in training camp. He also connected on a long reception from Patriots backup quarterback Tommy DeVito in the preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. However, the play was wiped away due
to an illegal man downfield penalty.
Along with Dixon and Dorner, the Patriots are also reportedly releasing rookie undrafted free agent Nick DeGennaro, who caught a 37-yard touchdown pass on a game-winning drive against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 of the preseason.
None of the rookie receivers were viewed as locks to make the final roster. The Patriots are so loaded at wide receiver that they were willing to ship Kayshon Boutte off in a trade to the Houston Texans.
With that said, they are surely hoping some of the receivers clear waivers and sign with the practice squad.
