New England Patriots star wide receiver A.J. Brown believes that he is receiving more attention from opposing defenses thus far this season, as they’ve keyed in on him in attempts to take him out of games.
That includes most recently in the team’s Week 7 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Speaking to the media in the locker room after the game on Thursday night, Brown opened up on how he feels defenses have been treating him this year and why, via Patriots on CLNS.
“I know what type of player I am...I get a lot of attention, teams try and take me away and it gives a lot of opportunities for other guys to make plays,” Brown said.
Brown recorded three receptions for 48 yards on six targets against Chicago and did not have the decisive game that he’s been
anticipated to have amid his slow start to the year. Chicago’s defensive attention on Brown contributed toward Patriots quarterback Drake Maye spreading the ball wide to all of his receivers throughout the game, and successfully so at that.
Despite his quiet performance, Brown remains one of the league’s premier wide receivers. His first game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 was cut short due to an ankle injury, which contributed toward him recording three catches for 26 yards in that game. In his return from his stint on injured reserve in Week 6, he recorded three receptions for 27 yards against the New York Jets.
Brown and the Patriots must now turn their attention to the weeks ahead and game plan more effectively on how he will get quality looks in the passing game. Brown’s awaited return to form remains as being perhaps the most important factor for New England’s offense as the team looks to regain momentum and strengthen its offensive consistency moving forward.
