The New England Patriots face the New York Jets in Week 6, an AFC East test that will see many storylines unfold.
New England will need strong performances on both sides of the ball to come away with the victory. The Jets are 2-3 on the year, but they are not a team to sleep on. Quarterback Geno Smith has gotten off to an efficient start, and the defense has been top-five in the NFL. Several key matchups and personnel decisions may shape the outcome of the game.
Let’s take a look at three things to watch for in the Patriots’ Week 6 matchup against the Jets.
Christian Gonzalez vs. Garrett Wilson
Christian Gonzalez’s return from a shoulder injury gives New England’s secondary a significant boost for the upcoming matchup against the Jets. His matchup against Garrett Wilson will be one
of the game’s defining battles. Gonzalez will be tasked with limiting Wilson’s ability to create separation, win contested catches and generate explosive plays.
Gonzalez is off to a strong start to the year with five passes defensed on the season. Wilson has 374 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown on the year. Taking away New York’s No. 1 receiver may prove to be the defining variable of the game.
Facing a stout Jets defense
New England’s offense will face a challenge against a physical Jets defensive front. New York is tied for the fifth-fewest passing yards allowed to opponents this season with 977 yards, and the team also has talent in its run defense. Establishing the run will be important for keeping the offense balanced for New England and preventing New York from focusing exclusively on quarterback Drake Maye.
The Patriots must win at the line of scrimmage, avoid costly turnovers and find ways to score in critical situations. If the ground game struggles, Maye might face increased pressure to air the ball out throughout the game.
Romeo Doubs’ potential breakout
Romeo Doubs will be a player to watch in the game. The Patriots view him as a significant part of the offense regardless of A.J. Brown's availability. With Brown now officially active, it could boost Doubs' opportunities with the bulk of the defensive attention now being directed at Brown. It could put him in more advantageous situations with winnable matchups.
His route running and ability to make plays downfield give him the potential for a big performance if New England utilizes him effectively.
