FOXBOROUGH, Mass — Will Campbell needed only one word to describe Drake Maye's performance in the New England Patriots' win over the Buffalo Bills.
"Familiar."
The quarterback had a slow start to the season, with some even referring to it as a "slump." And although it wasn't a flawless performance, Maye was instrumental in the win, having completed 22 of 37 passes for 269 yards with three passing touchdowns, as well as leading the team with 54 rushing yards.
"I thought he played really well," Campbell told Patriots Wire. "And just trying to do everything we can around him to help him in any way we can and let him do his thing."
His efforts earned him the honor of AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
"It's cool," the tackle added. "I know he probably
doesn't care too much about it, but it's cool to see. Very deserving."
And with that, Campbell highlighted that despite the change in his performance from Week 3 to Week 4, nothing changed about his preparation.
"I think he's very consistent," Campbell said. "One of the most consistent guys in the locker room. Just shows up every day, works hard, and it showed up on Sunday."
Maye shared similar comments.
"I think I try to stay the same and try to treat every week the same," the quarterback told reporters. "I wish I could try to point to something different, but no, I think it’s just a habit of getting confidence in the guys around us and around me. I think the guys up front did a heck of a job just trying to give our guys a chance in the passing game. I think we hit a little more, maybe we hit a few of the ones that I felt were there to be made. I think we’ve missed those the first few weeks, some opportunities for big plays, and I think we hit that.
"But really, just trying to get back at it, starting with practice, trying to study the plan the best I can. Also, realizing that you treat every week like you have to play well and play well in my position to end up on the right side of things."
