As part of the compensation committee, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was able to agree to a contract extension with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, but he still has yet to agree to a deal with 24-year-old cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
On Sunday, via ESPN's Adam Schefter, the news of Goodell's extension and Kraft's statement on the deal stole headlines. The timing wasn't necessarily great given how much the Patriots have struggled getting a deal done with Gonzalez. Even with the Seattle Seahawks and All-Pro cornerback Devon Witherspoon setting a baseline for an extension, the two sides have struggled to find a middle ground in the negotiations.
“As members of the Compensation Committee, we’re pleased to announce that we have reached
agreement with Roger to remain as Commissioner through the 2030 League Season, ending on March 31, 2031," Kraft said through a written statement. "...“We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years."
Gonzalez's trainer, Coach Flight, responded to the Goodell news and Kraft's statement with a GIF of actor Idris Elba staring someone down through lowered glasses.

There's no certainty that Gonzalez will play in the opener on his current contract.
So the Patriots could be without their best defensive player against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday. That has created plenty of frustration from fans hoping to see some kind of deal come to fruition.
Gonzalez is one of the Patriots' best players and arguably the best cornerback in the NFL. Taking age and talent into consideration, he is everything that a team would look for in a long-term player investment. The ball is in the Patriots' court to seal the deal.
