New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel had a pronounced evaluation regarding the interception that Drake Maye threw in the team’s 20-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Vrabel stated that quarterback Drake Maye was supposed to make a safer decision on the play that led to the interception, based on the defensive coverage that he was shown. He also deflected from attributing the turnover to the pass potentially being tipped.
“I don’t think so,” Vrabel said when asked whether the pass was tipped. “Again, I didn’t slow it down. When the linebacker drops that deep, we should probably just get it down to Reggie [Gilliam].”
Vrabel said Maye recognized the mistake, adding, “Those are the decisions that
the quarterback makes. Those are the decisions that Drake makes.”
Maye’s interception came in the third quarter when he attempted a pass toward tight end Hunter Henry. The throw was underthrown, allowing Steelers defender Patrick Queen to make the play and halt New England from potentially going on to score.
Maye ended up completing 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards in the game, though he did not throw a touchdown pass. He also added 17 rushing yards on four carries and was sacked three times as Pittsburgh pressured him throughout the game.
The interception was Maye’s fourth of the season through two games—a notable early total after he threw only eight interceptions in all of 2025. New England still secured the win, but Maye’s turnover trend remains a developing concern despite his reduced total against the Steelers compared to that of Week 1, when he threw three against the Seattle Seahawks.
