New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was critical but supportive of wide receiver A.J. Brown following his disappointing performance in the team’s 26-19 victory over the New York Jets in Week 6.
According to Patriots Wire’s Sophie Weller
, Vrabel stated after the game how the team had “all the confidence in the world” in Brown to make plays, but highlighted his shortcomings when evaluating his play."I think he could’ve probably made a few more plays, come down with a few more plays. He’s been out for a while. I know that he wanted to do well for his football team, and unfortunately it wasn’t his best effort," Vrabel said. "I know that he knows that, and we have all the confidence in the world in A.J. just to be able to finish those plays."
Brown finished with three receptions for 27 yards on 10 targets. His biggest mishap was a missed potential 61-yard touchdown connection with quarterback Drake Maye early in the second quarter that he did not catch. Brown also muffed an onside kick late in the fourth quarter that further diminished the quality of his performance.
The veteran Brown’s return after missing four consecutive games due to a high ankle sprain suffered during the Patriots’ season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks was uneventful. He spent ample time away from game action, and was not able to return to his elite form in his first game back.
Nevertheless, the Patriots improved to 4-2 on the year with their win over the Jets and will now look ahead toward facing the Chicago Bears on Thursday night in Week 7. Brown will have a short turnaround to rebuild chemistry with Maye and help New England extend its winning streak with a potential fourth-straight win against Chicago.
