The New England Patriots announced that they have signed offensive lineman Xavier Newman-Johnson to their practice squad and released offensive lineman Jacob Rizy prior to their Week 2 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Newman-Johnson joins the Patriots as an interior lineman with experience. He has played four seasons in the NFL for the Tennessee Titans (2022-23) and New York Jets (2023-25).
The Patriots’ coaching staff now has another player to develop within their system moving forward. The opportunity offers Newman-Johnson a chance to learn the Patriots’ scheme, compete in practice and show that he is capable of providing reliable depth. For New England, the transaction supplies flexibility along the interior of the line in the event
of injuries happening.
Rizy’s release brings his time with the Patriots to an end. He signed with the Patriots in May as an undrafted free agent but did not play in the team’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks prior to being released.
