If really needed, former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore believes he could still come out of retirement and take the field.

According to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, Gilmore offered a brief but confident response when jokingly asked whether he’d consider signing a three-day contract and suiting up for the team this weekend.

“I could,” Gilmore said.

The remark quickly sparked attention, given Gilmore’s history as one of the franchise’s premier defensive players of the recent era. Gilmore signed a one-day contract with the Patriots and officially retired with the team.

He played four of his 13 seasons in the NFL with the Patriots and won the AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. He was named to two All-Pro teams in his career and helped

the Patriots win the Super Bowl at the end of the 2018 season. Gilmore was an elite cornerback in the league and finished his career as a franchise great.

There was no indication that such a three-day contract discussion or comeback plan was underway. Still, Gilmore revives memories of his time in New England, when he regularly matched up with top opposing receivers and helped anchor the secondary.
