The New England Patriots have an ensemble of backup offensive linemen, headlined by Greg Van Roten, available to play at guard while Mike Onwenu spends time on injured reserve.
According to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel stated before practice on Wednesday that Van Roten, Walter Rouse and Ben Brown are among the players expected to work at guard while Onwenu is out.
Onwenu is dealing with a broken ankle that will keep him out for a considerable amount of time. The Patriots have not announced a definitive timetable for his return, but his absence will be greatly felt, given the steady production that he has consistently given New England on the right side of the line.
When asked about Onwenu's status, ESPN's Adam Schefter
admitted that he would be surprised if the veteran guard returned during the regular season.
“I’d be surprised [if he returned]. If they could have a deep run, that certainly enhances the chances. The way that I heard is—I think the regular season seems like that’s a realistic goal for him to miss. If he could come back any sooner, great, but I don’t know if they should be counting on that," Schefter said on WEEI's Rich & Ken with Ted Johnson.
Van Roten is a seasoned veteran in the league with a prior history of strong play in the interior. He played in 146 games with 105 starts under his belt.
Rouse is a veteran lineman who also offers experience to the Patriots, while Brown entered the season as an established backup guard/center for the team.
The three will get the chance to vie for time at guard in the Patriots’ next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Vrabel’s approach gives New England several options while Onwenu remains out. The coaching staff is expected to use the week to determine the most effective lineup for the matchup ahead against a strong Jaguars defense.
