New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel announced that safety Dell Pettus is being placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. Outside linebacker José Ramirez is being promoted to the 53-man roster as a result of the Pettus move, per Patriots Wire's Sophie Weller.
Pettus suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s 20-3 victory over the Steelers. It was a tough day for the Patriots' defensive secondary from an injury standpoint. Carlton Davis III was already out with an injury, and safety Craig Woodson suffered an injury that put him out during the game.
The Patriots hosted two free agent defensive backs for workouts in light of the injuries piling up in the backfield.

Pettus served as one of the top reserve options for the Patriots at safety. So his absence for any extended period of time is a blow to the defense.
Being on injured reserve means that the Patriots will be without Pettus for at least four games. All eyes will now turn to the health status of Woodson heading into the Week 3 meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
