New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson admitted that New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez had gotten the better of the one-on-one matchups heading into Sunday's game.
“I wouldn’t even say we’ve really had battles. He’s got the better of the matchup throughout these years for different reasons," Wilson said before Sunday's game. "He’s a really good player. Every time I get to play against a top player in this league, I’m excited for the opportunity."
Gonzalez has been a thorn in Wilson's side, as he has been for most wide receivers in the NFL. That was once again the case on Sunday with Wilson being held to four catches for 44 yards. The Patriots ultimately came away with a 26-19 victory in the end.
Surprisingly, Wilson wasn't
targeted much down the stretch. Perhaps that was because the Patriots had Gonzalez smothering him for most of the game. But at the same time, the Jets failed to draw up ways to scheme him away from Gonzalez to make plays.
According to Next Gen Stats, via WEEI's Justin Turpin, Gonzalez covered Wilson on 17 routes and only allowed two catches for 20 yards.
Per Next Gen Stats, Christian Gonzalez matched up against Garrett Wilson on 17 routes in Week 6, 12 of them in man coverage, and allowed two receptions for 20 yards on two targets.

That's the fewest targets, receptions, and yards Gonzalez has allowed to Wilson in any game where…
"He's a really good player. He followed me, and some plays he didn't," Wilson told reporters after the game. "I think we were just taking advantage of whatever look we were getting, whatever look Geno was seeing. And that's how it shook out today."
The Jets proved that they are no pushover against a red-hot Patriots team coming off back-to-back wins over the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders. Wilson can look forward to another matchup with Gonzalez down the line when the Patriots visit MetLife Stadium in Week 16 on December 27.
