New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye enters Week 3 as a low-end QB1 whom fantasy managers may seriously want to consider starting after careful analysis.
ESPN’s Liz Loza highlighted the reasons to proceed with caution before deciding to start or sit Maye in Week 3, highlighting his underwhelming passing production and early turnover issues as reasons why he is not the easy must-start option that he was forecasted to be on a weekly basis leading up to the season.
“Plagued by constant pressure, Maye has struggled to be decisive, holding on to the ball too long and forcing throws into unavailable windows,” Loza said. “He's taken six sacks, registered a league-high number of turnovers and scored fewer than 10 points in both his matchups. His
receiving corps is unlikely to bail him out anytime soon, as Kayshon Boutte was traded to Houston and Brown is likely to remain sidelined for another four games.”
Maye opened the season completing 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in the Patriots’ 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He added 47 rushing yards on seven attempts.
In Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Maye completed 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, while rushing four times for 17 yards. Through two games, he has totaled 386 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and a league-high four interceptions. He also has 64 rushing yards this year.
Maye’s rushing prowess gives him a path to high-end QB1 production, particularly if he finds the end zone on the ground in Week 3 and bounces back with a strong All-Pro-caliber performance in the passing game akin to his play from last season. He remains a player to start in deeper leagues, but quarterbacks on more of a roll to start the year deserve consideration.
