The New England Patriots' contract talks with star cornerback Christian Gonzalez have been at the center of offseason storylines for quite a while. Now, we are getting a look into how the negotiations are being conducted and who might be responsible for getting things done.
According to Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan, Patriots vice president of football administration Matt Groh has been "at the center" of the team's "prolonged contract negotiations with Christian Gonzalez's representation."
Groh is currently the vice president of football administration after serving as the director of player personnel from 2022 to 2024. He has been a key figure in roster building and overseeing the current roster.
Callahan wrote:
"Groh is at the center of the Patriots’
prolonged contract negotiations with Christian Gonzalez’s representation, according to sources. Rumblings around the league suggest Gonzalez’s camp has been frustrated with the Patriots, in part because Groh is in a position similar to what he was under Bill Belichick: working with a set of talking points but unable to approve changes or alterations to a potential deal himself.
"The distance put between Gonzalez’s camp and team decision-makers who could negotiate more directly, like Wolf, director of research Richard Miller and Patriots ownership, is intentional, according to agents who have worked with the Patriots before and say other franchises use similar tactics to wear down players and their reps in negotiations."
Will this tactic be effective or blow up in the Patriots' face ahead of the season opener?
There are no guarantees that Gonzalez will play without a new deal. With one of the biggest games of the year merely two days away, it's hard to envision things getting less complicated unless the sides hit a major breakthrough late.
That isn't impossible given the unpredictable nature of contract negotiations, but for every hour that ticks off the clock, it's less likely the Patriots are to see a happy ending unfold.
