New England Patriots star cornerback Christian Gonzalez turned in an impressive defensive performance against the Seattle Seahawks in Wednesday night’s season opener, repeatedly making life difficult for Seahawks wide receivers during the game.
According to Pro Football Focus, Gonzalez allowed just two catches for nine yards, broke up two passes and held opposing quarterbacks to a 47.9 passer rating after being targeted five times in coverage against the Seahawks.
The Patriots cornerback excelled throughout the game, limiting Seahawks receivers from making impact plays and preventing Seattle from generating significant gains outside. His ability to cause disruption was evident in the two pass breakups that he recorded, both of which stopped potential
completions and helped disrupt the Seahawks’ offensive flow.
Gonzalez’s work showed up beyond the highlight reel, with good coverage on Seahawks receivers, including superstar wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
That led to incompletions in the red zone and other areas of the field that contributed to New England holding the lead for much of the game before ultimately falling to Seattle by a score of 13-10. He also forced Seahawks quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Drew Lock to search elsewhere for openings in the passing game.
It was a composed, physical outing that highlighted Gonzalez’s ability to match up effectively against opposing receivers.
