Mack Hollins has clearly loved his time with the New England Patriots.
He loved it so much that he was willing to readjust his contract incentives when faced with the possibility of being released by the team.
According to Boston Herald's Doug Kyed, the Patriots asked Hollins to change his incentives from "likely to be earned" to "not likely to be earned." The veteran wide receiver's incentives were initially set at $300,000 for 30 receptions, $300,000 for 40 receptions and $400,000 for 50 receptions before the roster cut day.
Now, his incentives are $300,000 for 47 receptions, $300,000 for 50 receptions and $400,000 for 55 receptions.
"Nobody wants to change anything, but that's sometimes what happens," Hollins said. "(It) makes you want to come
out and work, but not any harder than I already work. Yeah, I mean that's an unfortunate side of the business, but I'm happy to be here."
The Patriots are obviously happy Hollins is still with the team as well, given their current predicament. They traded Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans before the start of the season, and A.J. Brown is currently on injured reserve with an ankle injury that he suffered in the opener against the Seattle Seahawks last week.
It would have been a disaster if the Patriots moved on from Hollins, who immediately stepped up as quarterback Drake Maye's best receiving target after Brown went down.
“That’s kind of how it works. That’s the risk that you run. It’s like, ‘Hey, you could take this offer, or we could potentially cut you.’ They’re not saying, like — that’s the business,” Hollins said.
