FOXBOROUGH, Mass — After a rainy day forced the New England Patriots inside on Monday, they were back outside with fans filling the stands on a gorgeous day at Gillette Stadium. And with that, they got back to work for the ninth training camp session.
Here are the takeaways from Tuesday's session:
1. Two minute drills
For the first time during training camp, the Patriots did some situational football in which they started with the ball on their own 20-yard line and 1:05 on the clock. The goal was to get the ball into field goal position, and both Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito were successful at that.
For Maye, he missed his first throw over the middle to Romeo Doubs, but then hit Hunter Henry and DeMario Douglas for shorter completions. He then followed it up with a long
ball to Mack Hollins and then a slant to A.J. Brown, that left :04 on the clock. Borregales then made the 54-yard field goal.
As for DeVito, he missed his first two attempts, one of which was to Kayshon Boutte and the other was a throwaway, but then hit Mack Hollins for the first down. Another incompletion to Kyle Williams came next, but then he had two straight completions, one to Boutte and another to Mack. Borregales then made the 49-yard attempt.
2. Drake Maye - A.J. Brown connection continues to get better
A.J. Brown proved that his dislocated thumb wasn't going to hold him back, having an impressive day where he caught all four of his targets from Maye. Hollins went 4-for-4 as well, while Boutte finished 5-for-7, with both catching passes from Maye and Devito
3. Andy Borregales' impressive summer continues
Along with his two field goal attempts in the two-minute drill that were successful, Borregales also had five other attempts earlier in practice and made all five, including one from more than 50 yards out. That brings his total up to 28-of-30 throughout training camp so far.
"He’s made the majority of his field goals, a high majority,” Vrabel said. "I think he’s continuing to work with Tom [Quinn] on his steps, the consistency and everything else.”
4. Quarterback stats
11-on-11s
Drake Maye: 12-for-17
Tommy DeVito: 12-for-17
Behren Morton: 3-for-5
Maye started practice going 1-for-5, but turned things around, going 11-for-12 in the periods that followed.
5. Attendance
ABSENT: CB Carlton Davis, TE Jack Westover, FB Reggie Gilliam, OG Caedan Wallace, WR Cameron Dorner
RETURNING: WR Kyle Williams, DT David Blay Jr.
LIMITED: OT Morgan Moses, DL Christian Barmore
PUP/NFI: TE C.J. Dippre, ED Harold Landry III, S Brenden Schooler
6. Other notes
- The quarterbacks were spreading the ball during the team drills, with many different receivers getting the opportunity to run their routes and catch passes. Of course, that included A.J. Brown, Mack Hollins, and Kayshon Boutte, but players like Nick DeGennaro, Kyle Dixon, and Mitch Van Vooren also received some solid reps.
- Elijah Ponder ended Tuesday's practice with a pass breakup and what would have likely been a sack in a game situation. Dre'Mont Jones added two would-be sacks of his own.
- PLAY OF THE DAY: Mack Hollins hauls in a 40-yard (ish) catch from Tommy DeVito along the right sideline with cornerback Channing Canada in coverage.
- Terrell Jennings received the first reps with the second-team offense over Lan Larison.
- Linebacker Chad Muma was repping with the starters, making a strong case to be behind Christian Elliss and Robert Spillane on the depth chart.
What's next?
The Patriots will hold a non-padded practice on Wednesday, Aug. 5, that is set to be just a walkthrough starting at 10 a.m. ET. The practice will be closed to the public, but media will be in attendance.
