New England Patriots defensive tackle Milton Williams praised quarterback Drake Maye after New England’s 45-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5.
According to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, Williams stated after the win that he never lost confidence in Maye after the Patriots star quarterback got off to a slow start to the year.
“He’s balling. I just told him I never lost confidence in him,” Williams said. “And what he’s able to do, give him time. He’s gonna put the ball where it needs to go and he’s gonna execute at a high level. You know, it’s our job to turn the ball over and get it back to him and let him score as many points as he can.”
Through the first three weeks of the season, Maye threw for a substandard 585 yards, while posting quite
an alarming 1-to-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His six picks, including a three-pick game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 and a two-interception outing against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3, stood out in the wrong way. His Week 5 performance marked his first game without a pick and his highest passing-yard total of the season.
Maye completed 26-of-34 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns against Las Vegas, along with seven carries for 25 yards and a rushing touchdown.
The performance came one week after he completed 22-of-37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in a 29-26 win against the Buffalo Bills. Maye has found his groove after finishing last season as the AP MVP runner-up and will get the chance to ride his current momentum into the Patriots’ Week 6 matchup against the New York Jets.
