Florida football begins the Jon Sumrall era on Saturday evening against Florida Atlantic and how the program starts the 2026 campaign will determine whether a CFP run is viable this season, according to ESPN. Sumrall has an opportunity to settle his team before conference play kicks off, inviting Florida Atlantic and Campbell to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
After a pair of home games, the Gators start a brutal nine-game SEC schedule that starts in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Sept. 19 before they host Ole Miss on Sept. 26. "All three programs have first-year head coaches trying to make early statements, but Sumrall arguably has the most work to do after the Gators went 4-8 last season," says ESPN senior college football insider Heather Dinich.
The late
September stretch will define the Gators' season, says Dinich. "According to ESPN Analytics, Florida will lose six SEC games, including to Auburn and Ole Miss. If the Gators can win those games, though, they have a great chance of doubling their win total from a year ago and changing the narrative heading into the heart of SEC play."
The games will serve as a measuring stick for Sumrall, Auburn's Alex Golesh and Ole Miss' Pete Golding.
Sumrall inherited one of the bigger rebuilding jobs among the first-year coaches featured, with UF winning just four games a season ago. While current projections do not favor the Gators, beating Auburn and Ole Miss could put Florida in a position to secure a winning season. A strong September could also change expectations for marquee matchups in October when the team faces No. 5 Texas (Oct. 17), No. 3 Georgia (Oct. 31), and No. 10 Oklahoma (Nov. 7) during a three-game stretch.
ESPN doesn't list Florida among five CFP sleeper teams, giving Sumrall and the Gators bulletin-board material heading into a pivotal month.
