Florida basketball opens its 2027-27 campaign against in-state rival Miami on Nov. 2 in Tampa, giving the Gators a chance to make an immediate statement against a quality Hurricanes team that sprung onto the scene last season with a young head coach in Jai Lucas.
The matchup has also caught ESPN's attention, earning a spot among the network's 10 key men's college basketball games to watch in November
.The Gators enter the new season with significant expectations after establishing themselves among the nation's elite. Florida has already debuted this season as the conference's preseason top team.
Much like other major media outlets, Florida's returning experience was highlighted as one of its biggest advantages entering the matchup. Rather than
opening against an overmatched opponent, the Gators will test that continuity against a Miami team that has the potential to make a deep run in March.
The Hurricanes should provide Florida with an early measuring stick. While the Gators enter with the advantage in continuity, Miami has enough talent to make the opener far from a traditional early-season tuneup.
Playing a quality opponent early should also give Florida a chance to learn more about itself before the schedule intensifies heading into December. The Gators will have to establish their rotations, integrate new pieces, and adjust to increased expectations while facing a capable opponent from the opening tip.
Florida and Miami are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
