Florida moved up one spot on The Athletic's first re-ranking of the 2026 season, following a convincing win over FAU.
The Gators climbed from No. 31 in Chris Vannini’s preseason Athletic 138 to No. 30 after Jon Sumrall’s debut victory. Florida sits between No. 29 Illinois and No. 31 South Carolina, with Missouri and Auburn also close behind at Nos. 32 and 34.
Early-season rankings don't mean a ton, which Vannini readily admits.
“Teams can ‘drop’ after a win or ‘rise’ after a loss early on,” Vannini wrote. “Do not worry about that right now.”
Early volatility explains Florida's lack of movement despite a 66-point showing and 45-point margin of victory. Florida Atlantic opened the season ranked No. 110, so the Gators simply met expectations with a dominant
win. Still, Florida's ranking gives a good feel for where it stands among SEC teams.
The Gators are ninth among the league’s 16 teams, trailing LSU, Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama and Tennessee. South Carolina, Missouri and Auburn sit immediately behind Florida, while Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Arkansas round out the SEC below that cluster.
A Week 2 matchup against Campbell isn't likely to move the needle much either, but things get real on Sept. 19 when Florida opens SEC play on the road against Auburn.
