Wide receiver Dallas Wilson is one of the most exciting players on Florida's roster. The second-year pass catcher spoke to reporters on Tuesday after Florida's pre-fall camp press conference and touched on the renewed energy in the building.
Wilson said he was excited to play in a diverse offense under coordinator Buster Faulkner and addressed the bond developed amongst the players over the offseason. He also reflected on his injury issues last season and how it helped him grow as a person.
A dynamic personality, Wilson wasn't shy about sharing the fun the players are having within the receivers room. Challenging one another and competing with the defensive backs make for a positive environment, one that's helped develop that aforementioned bond.
Here's everything Wilson said.
How familiar are you with Steve Spurrier’s and Urban Meyer’s offenses, and how exciting is the possibility of combining elements of both?
I mean, it’s a real diverse offense. You’ve got long shots, then you’ve got JB running the ball back there. Man, who’s going to stop that guy? So it’s like, when you’re running these routes or running these plays with Coach Buster and doing the things he’s asking you, it gets real fun. It’s like just going out there, backyard football.
How tough was dealing with the foot injury last season?
I’d say it was really tough, but it taught me patience as well. Being very patient and just sticking to my routine, sticking to that routine and really just being good at it. So going through that really helped me grow and mature as a man.
Is there anything that still needs to come together for the team during fall camp?
I feel like we face a little more adversity and then get after each other, and then really just bond as a team. You’ve got position groups and everything, but on this team as a whole, we should have an amazing team.
Does the start of fall camp feel different this year?
Me personally, I’m having a lot of fun. I made a bet with all the DBs, and I’ve got their names on a checklist like Chad Ochocinco did when he was in the league for the Bengals. I told them, "Bro, every day I beat you, I’m going to keep score, by the way." We’ve got that bet going on, so they put my name in their lockers. It’s a lot of fun.
What have you seen from the leadership in the wide receiver room?
Khaleil (Jackson), yes sir. Man, that man is coaching me every day. I feel like he’s always telling me, "I’m always on you." Then he’s taking after the younger guys.
When I came in my freshman year, and now you’ve got Marquez (Daniel) and guys like that at the X position, and he’s even coaching Michael Mays, it’s like we’re all taking a leadership role. I feel like the receivers, we all lead each other, and then lead the team as well.
Did you attend the defensive line cookout?
I did, I did. I was supposed to be there last year, but I couldn’t make it. But me and Coach Chatman, man, that’s my guy. I’m locked in with a lot of guys in the defensive line room. Just being out there, I didn’t feel out of place or nothing. It was just like family, nothing but family to me. Being out there eating good barbecue, it was amazing.
What is the competition like between the wide receivers and defensive backs?
Yeah, we plan. I always say the first day of fall camp, we’re going to let them feel us every day. Me and the receivers have got a thing going on where we’re going to attack one DB. I picked the DB for the first day. I picked Ben Hanks. So we’re going to go at him a lot, and we’re going to knock at him.
The receivers even have a thing going on where, if we drop a ball, that’s 100 pushups. So we’re always competing, always having a little competition between ourselves.
How have you seen the energy change within the program?
I feel like this team right now, we took on a big leadership role. When we went through player-led practices and everything, players stepped up as men. We’re going into a real bonded team this year, so I feel like we’re really close together.
How can that closeness help the team this season?
You’ve got to depend on your brother regardless. You’ve got to depend on the man next to you. This game can’t be played by yourself. So just depending on the guy next to me and knowing he’s doing the right thing and I’m doing the right thing, that’ll take us wherever we want to go.
What is it like being around Jon Sumrall?
He’s always joking with me. We’re always nitpicking at each other, even in the weight room. Every time we’re in the weight room, Coach Sumrall is working out with us, doing pullups. I always tell him, "Put on the heavy vest," or something, or, "Do the workout with us." It’s always fun.
What does it mean to have a head coach working out alongside the players?
It’s fun. I wish he’d get through the whole workout, but it’s always fun seeing your head coach out there with y’all, putting in the work and then feeling the grind and the sweat and tears with you. It’s amazing.
Is he trying to look good for his wife?
He probably is, man. He probably is.
How do the team’s gains in the weight room affect its mentality and mental strength?
A stronger team is better because the SEC is very competitive. The stronger we get, the better. Less injuries. So just really staying ahead of that.
