Florida football scored a massive upset win in Week 7 over the Texas Longhorns, who fell to the Gators at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, 27-24.
Jon Sumrall and Co. had lost two straight games by blowout margins — including an embarrassing homecoming defeat against one of the SEC's bottom dwellers — and despite falling behind early, were able to will their way over a top-10 Texas team. Tramell Jones Jr. got his first collegiate start and put together a legitimately solid stat line, going 22-for-35 for 155 yards through the air in addition to 41 yards on 10 tries on the ground.
Immediately after the game, ABC sideline reporter Kris Budden spoke with both Sumrall and Jones Jr. about Florida's biggest win of the 2026 campaign
so far. Here is what they said.
Q: After taking punches in the first half, how did the team respond?
SUMRALL: "We played about as awful as we could in the first quarter, and we kept fighting. We didn't do that the past couple of weeks, to be honest with you. When things got tough, we flinched the last couple weeks. Our team grew today — without the win — because we fought."
Q: What impressed you most about the way Tramell Jones Jr. managed the offense today?
SUMRALL: "Well, it wasn't perfect. He knows that. He missed some things, but he battled. I love both our quarterbacks. The way they've handled themselves through external people maybe wanting to create controversy or BS."
Q: Walk me through the emotions of coming into this environment and how you were able to pull this out
JONES: "I didn't take it any bigger than it was. Just another time of me playing football. I've been doing it my whole life. Started off a little slow on offense. We picked it up, and that's how you finish the football game."
Q: What happened at halftime? How did this thing turn around?
JONES: "We stayed resilient. We kept the energy up at halftime. We knew we had mistakes, and we finished in the second half — we closed it out."
Q: Your first career start, your first career win. How does this moment feel?
JONES: "It feels great, but this is just the start. It's not over. We've got the bye week to prepare for Georgia and then we're going to Georgia."
