The scorching hot start to Jon Sumrall's tenure with Florida football got a splash of cold water in Week 5 with a resounding 45-17 defeat at the hands of Missouri in Columbia. Nothing seemed to go right for the Gators while the Tigers seemed to have all the answers on both sides of the ball.
While most of the polls and rankings severely penalized the Orange and Blue for its embarrassing performance at Faurot Field on Saturday, The Athletic's Chris Vannini was much gentler in his weekly college football 138 re-rank, keeping Florida among his top 10. He demoted the Gators six spots to No. 9, putting them between No. 8 BYU and No. 10 Ole Miss.
"Florida only drops to No. 9 because of its win against Ole Miss last week," Vannini notes. "You can argue
the Gators should be behind Missouri after Saturday, and I can’t say you’re wrong. I just see the Gators’ position to be as strong as Ole Miss at the moment. A blowout win balances out a blowout loss."
Meanwhile, the Gators are ranked No. 15 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and No. 16 in the AP Top 25.
SEC schools in The Athletic's 138 re-rank top 25
The Southeastern Conference now has nine schools among the top 25 of The Athletic's re-rank – up one from last week — with Texas leading the way at No. 1, followed by Georgia (No. 3), Alabama (No. 5), Florida (No. 9) and Ole Miss (No. 10) in the top 10. The remaining schools representing the league are LSU (No. 11), Mississippi State (No. 14), Missouri (No. 15) and Tennessee (No. 18).
