Florida dropped three spots in The Athletic’s weekly SEC vibes rankings despite handling its business against Campbell.
The Gators fell from No. 7 to No. 10 after a 52-3 win over the Fighting Camels, though Seth Emerson made it clear the move had more to do with what happened elsewhere in the league than anything Florida did wrong.
“Jon Sumrall has done what he should against an opening schedule that did not include Utah, Miami or even South Florida,” Emerson wrote. “Now comes the first test, against fellow first-year coach Alex Golesh.”
Fair enough.
Florida has outscored FAU and Campbell by a combined 94 points, but neither game told us much about how the Gators will look against SEC competition. At the end of the day, conference wins matter most,
and Auburn is a good first test for Florida.
The Tigers sit one spot behind Florida at No. 11 after opening 2-0 themselves. Auburn already survived a close call against Baylor before cruising past Southern Miss, so Emerson argues there is a little more pressure on Golesh entering the matchup. It is his first home game as an SEC coach, after all.
Saturday should reveal a lot more about both first-year coaches than the first two weeks combined. A road win at Jordan-Hare would give Florida its first meaningful statement of the Sumrall era and almost certainly send the vibes back upward.
