Florida football lost its homecoming game for the first time since 2018 on Saturday, succumbing to South Carolina, 38-19, in a second straight blowout against an SEC opponent — both of which the Gators were favored to win.
"I'm frustrated with every part of what we did today," head coach Jon Sumrall said after the game. "Just not a good football performance by us."
Following the conclusion of Week 6's collegiate gridiron grind, CBS Sports writer Shehan Jeyarajah published his winners and losers column, with Sumrall and Co. predictably landing on the latter list.
"Just six games into the season, the Gators have played their way both into and out of the national conversation. The No. 16 Gators lost a 38-19 beatdown against South Carolina, fully taking
the luster off the Jon Sumrall era," Jeyarajah notes.
"Running back Jadan Baugh was one of the most dynamic players in the country through four weeks, but South Carolina bottled him up to the tune of 3.9 yards per carry. Making a bowl game will be a decent step forward in Sumrall's first season, but any hope of legitimately competing in the SEC goes by the wayside."
The Gators look to get back on the winning track next weekend in Austin against the Longhorns, who are coming off a disappointing loss of their own. Florida has beaten Texas just once in five tries — a 29-21 victory last season in the Swamp, which represented the high-water mark of UF's 2025 campaign.
