Florida football commit Easton Royal's confidence in Jon Sumrall has only grown since flipping from Texas earlier this month.
The Gators' 27-24 upset victory over the Longhorns on Saturday seemingly reinforced Royal's conviction, with the 5A offensive MVP and first-team all-state selection stating that Florida is "one of the best teams in the country." He also told Swamp247, "It can show the team that they do have the chance to play with any team in the country."
Royal ranks No. 14 nationally, No. 2 among wide and No. 2 in Louisiana in the 2027 cycle, according to 247Sports. The five-star wide receiver switched his commitment from Texas to Florida following the Gators' back-to-back conference losses to South Carolina and Missouri.
Despite stumbling
after their 4-0 start, the top-rated pass catcher believes Florida's ceiling is much higher than what we've seen this season. Royal described this year's roster as potentially the worst Sumrall will field at UF. He went on to emphasize Sumrall's ability to influence talent on the recruiting trail.
Receivers coach Marcus Davis joined Sumrall on his journey to New Orleans to watch Royal play just days before the Texas matchup. "Most teams, they probably wouldn't have, knowing they had to face a team like Texas, but they still made a way to come and see me."
Royal has already become a recruiter of sorts, identifying 2028 three-star wideout Jarvis Stevenson as a player he wants to bring to Gainesville.
