Florida’s loss to South Carolina sent the Gators farther down The Athletic’s weekly SEC vibes rankings, although the slide was not nearly as dramatic as the week before.
Seth Emerson dropped Florida two spots from No. 7 to No. 9 after the Gators’ 38-19 loss to South Carolina. It was Florida’s second straight defeat after a 45-17 loss at Missouri knocked the Gators from No. 1 all the way to No. 7 a week earlier.
“So apparently, the Gators under Jon Sumrall will either win or lose in spectacular fashion. That’s very confusing,” Emerson wrote.
That about sums up Florida’s season so far. The Gators opened 4-0 and climbed to the top of Emerson’s SEC vibes rankings after beating Ole Miss, only to follow that with consecutive losses by 28 and 19 points.
Florida now sits at 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play heading into a road matchup with Texas. The Longhorns are dealing with their own rapidly deteriorating vibes after falling from No. 4 to No. 14 following a 27-24 loss to Oklahoma.
Looking around the rest of the conference, Kentucky holds the top spot after beating LSU 35-34 in overtime, while Georgia jumped four places to No. 2 after a 20-17 road win over Alabama. Missouri rounds out the top three.
Florida’s recent path through the rankings has been almost as volatile as its season: No. 7 after Week 1, No. 10 after Week 2, No. 2 after Week 3, No. 1 after Week 4, No. 7 after Week 5 and now No. 9.
A trip to Texas gives the Gators another chance to swing the vibes back in the other direction.
