Claire Stegall finished top five in the 1500-meter run at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships this past Saturday, a little over a month after winning the same event's title at the USATF U20 Championships.
After advancing to the 1500-meter final round with a time of 4:05.61, Florida’s Claire Stegall faced a field featuring some of the nation’s top middle-distance runners at Icahn Stadium.
The race remained tightly contested through the opening 800 meters, with the top 11 runners separated by less than a second. Stegall entered the final lap in ninth place but delivered one of the competition’s fastest closing splits, clocking 46.11 seconds over the final 400 meters. Her strong finish propelled her to fifth place with a time of 4:10.24.
Despite the conclusion of the USATF Outdoor Championships, Stegall’s summer season continues. The incoming sophomore won the USATF U20 1,500-meter title in June with a school-record time of 4:04.59 and will compete in the event at the World Athletics U20 Championships from Aug. 5-9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
