Florida football passed its first major test on Saturday night in Jordan-Hare Stadium with a 44-39 victory over the Auburn Tigers.
For the first time since 2007, the Gators put up 40-plus points in their first three games of the season as the offense continues to roll along under Brad Faulkner's tutelage. However, the defense continued to show some weaknesses, and the penalty flag was a major factor for the first time under Jon Sumrall.
Nonetheless, the Orange and Blue prevailed in its SEC opener and scored its first road win since 2024. There were plenty of points to take away from this one — both on the positive and negative sides.

GOOD: Florida walked into a hostile Jordan-Hare Stadium and looked prepared for its first SEC road win under Jon Sumrall. Buster Faulkner's offense involves lots of movement and communication and the crowd noise didn't seem to fluster the Gators at all.
On defense, Brad White's unit didn't have any busted assignments and put Byrum Brown under pressure all evening. Jadab Baugh was sensational again, running to his fourth straight game of 100-plus yards.
BAD: Aaron Philo was solid overall, but his deep ball remains an area that needs improvement. The redshirt sophomore missed a few opportunities downfield and threw his second interception of the season. Florida won big despite the misfires, but Philo will need to continue improving if the Gators want to have playoff aspirations.
UGLY: Florida's lack of discipline was the obvious blemish on Saturday night's win. The Gators were flagged 16 times for 138 yards. Sumrall's team was talented enough to overcome those mistakes tonight, but that many flags could swing an SEC game.

GOOD: Outside of Auburn's Byrum Brown, the Gators really buckled down on the rushing attack, only allowing 40 total rushing yards. The defensive front was quick to the ball and didn’t fall victim to much of the Tigers' ground game. Florida’s defense also sacked Brown seven times en route to the victory.
BAD: Despite Florida’s defense being mentioned in the good, it was also a contributor to the bad; the UF defense gave up 39 points to an Auburn offense that came into the game as the second-worst in the SEC. The Gators also failed to contain Tigers quarterback Byrum Brown, who rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown.
UGLY: Ten first-half penalties for 68 yards proved to be costly for the Gators. One in particular was a third-down unnecessary roughness penalty on the defense that would have gotten them off the field had it not happened. Whether I agree with the call or not, the Florida defense shouldn't have put itself in that position given how the Auburn offense was moving at that point in the game.
Adam Dubbin
GOOD: Florida's offensive skill players stepped up in this one once again, headlined by Jadan Baugh, who finished with 163 yards and three scores on a hefty 26 carries, along with Vernell Brown III, who led the receiver corps with five passes thrown to him for 86 yards.
Philo also turned in a strong overall effort, completing 15 of 22 pass attempts for 204 yards with a TD and an interception that was not his fault. While his downfield work still needs some refinement, he did manage three big plays through the air on deep passes against an SEC defense, so there is hope that he is improving in that aspect of his game.
BAD: The defense had some shining moments in the first quarter, holding Auburn to minus-3 yards and a field goal that came after an interception deep in Florida territory, but would struggle to contain the Tigers' passing attack at many points later in the game.
They did manage to put pressure on Brown, but too many times he was able to find his targets downfield or use his mobility for big gains. Sure, the former South Florida Bull is known for these types of performances, but it would have been encouraging to see the defense lock down a bit more.
UGLY: Florida's penalties in this game — particularly on the offensive side of the ball — were reminiscent of the Billy Napier era, when the team time and time again shot itself in the foot with boneheaded mistakes. The Gators were flagged a whopping 16 times for 138 yards of loss, with 10 of those coming against the offense for 75 yards, four against the defense for 33 yards and two on special teams for 30 yards.
Fortunately, Florida had just enough to outlast Auburn on Saturday night despite those blunders.

GOOD: The tests for Sumrall, Faulkner and Philo all went very well. Not only were the new Florida Gators ready for the spotlight in an SEC matchup, but they looked like a team that should be at the top of the conference.
Sumrall and Faulkner controlled the pace of play in this, and Auburn didn't have answers to Florida's multi-pronged offense. It all went very well and is encouraging. You still have to beat the Alabama, Georgia and Texas tier next, though.
BAD: Not the best idea to let a running quarterback walk down the field with the better part of 10 minutes to play, but I'm sure the match worked out. Florida played to win until it got the cushion it wanted; then things felt more like a play-not-to-lose.
UGLY: Auburn scrambling for garbage-time scores and not knowing how to onside kick well.
