Florida football's perfect start to the 2026 campaign came to a screeching halt in Week 5 with a brutal 45-17 road loss to the Missouri Tigers. It was the Gators' fifth loss in seven tries at Faurot Field and the worst-ever defeat in the all-time series between the two schools.
It was also the first setback of the Jon Sumrall era — one that will not be forgotten anytime soon. Florida was outplayed in every aspect of the game, with the Gators struggling to put points on the board while the defense could do little to stop the Tigers' offensive onslaught.
Following the devastating defeat, Sumrall spoke to the press about his team's failures in Columbia on Saturday. Here is a look at what he told the media.
Jon Sumrall's opening statement
Hats off to Missouri. They played really
good today. We did not, and that was an earned loss by us. They are a good football team. They didn't need our help. They played really good, hats off to them, like I said. But we did not play to our standard.
Embarrassing performance in every phase. Starts with the coaching, starts with me. I told the guys in the locker room just now, I expect everybody to be a man, which means be accountable for your actions and own it. I'm going to start that way right now. I'm not going to point fingers at anybody, but we have to play a lot better. I'm sick to my freaking stomach with what we just did, like, livid.
With that, we will open it up.
On Bryce Thornton not playing in the game
Had a little tweak that happened in pregame warmups. Something that I've never really seen a whole lot of. Just went out there and was not right. Warming up, felt something that didn't feel good. Lower body. Kind of like a soft tissue thing, which was hard to predict because he practiced this week.
Just went out in the warmups and was not himself, and came over and told the trainers, like, "Hey, I got something going on." As they examined him, it wasn't good enough to go.
On the performance in the secondary, Sumrall's level of concern
We haven't played to the standard we need to play at a lot this year there, and I haven't hidden from that. It's not just one guy, it's been certain guys on different downs. There's sometimes it's coverage discipline, detail, and leverage.
They beat us on the out and up, they beat us on a go ball, they got 19 on the move on a lot of third downs. We didn't play great technique on him. We knew he was the move guy to motion to try and create space to get him open. There was a couple times we were gonna bracket him, and we didn't execute the call great, to be quite honest. It would be a really easy fix if it was just one guy. It would be a really easy fix if it was just one thing.
The problem is right now it's different guys wearing the hat that maybe are giving something up, and then different issues that are presenting that are really, when you're trying to maybe plug one hole, and another one opens. And then when you're calling the game, like Coach White, he can't protect everybody.
Somebody has got to win a one-on-one down. Like there's 11 guys on each side, and we have to win some one-on-ones out there on the perimeter, which we are not doing enough of right now.
On the inability to get the run game going
They did a really good job of playing with physicality. We missed some things, but I thought they swarmed well to the football. I don't think the flow of the game really dictated us not getting the run game. They played good defense, and we didn't execute.
We still tried to commit to the run coming out of the half, because, you know, when you're in the third quarter and you're down 17, it's not like you can't run the ball still. Now, in the fourth quarter, we get to a spot where you kind of have no choice. That was something that they did really good tonight, and we did not execute well in the run game in a lot of different areas.
What bothered Sumrall the most about Florida's performance
I can't pin it down to one thing. Look, what bothered me was our lack of execution, our lack of discipline, our lack of detail. I did not feel that this week, but, man, today, it's like, guys, you get 12 regular season opportunities, you can't let one get away from you without giving your best, and the fact that we put less than our best out there absolutely makes me freaking sick. I am freaking livid over the fact that we just did that.
Anybody that — I told the guys in the locker room, anybody that's comfortable with that, come see me tonight. We ain't moving forward like this. The score is the score. But it's not just what we do — it's how we do it, and how we just did what we did; it's not acceptable, and it will not be acceptable.
I'm livid. I'm frustrated about so many things that I can't pin it down to one thing.
Why did the team show up like that? How does Sumrall address that?
It's a good question. I didn't feel it this week. I made sure to show them all the things that you try to show guys about not being casual or complacent, continue to be urgent, and tough, and gritty, and blue-collar. And, I don't know. I know there's been a lot of pats on the back. I've tried to make sure they understand that that doesn't matter. What matters is showing up every day and being at your best.
I don't know what to attribute to today. I don't know that we're a very mature team yet. And that's not letting them off the hook, or letting me off the hook, but we've got to grow up. We've got to be a more mature outfit, and you cannot play that way against anybody in this league and expect an outcome that's going to be favorable, because it ain't getting any easier. Every team you play in this league is gonna be talented.
Like I said, Missouri won. We earned the loss. They don't need the help, but we beat ourselves at times tonight too.
On falling short after several highs
"Yeah, I've seen the worst, Edgar. They've been there. We haven't looked like a complete football team at any moment to me yet.
So, I think, sometimes the record, like having not lost, or maybe sometimes beating a team that was ranked at a certain spot, can make people feel like you've arrived or you've done something. The standard of how you play this game, it doesn't matter just, I mean, yeah, I want to be 1-0 every week. But that's not enough.
We have to be so much more detailed and disciplined in how we do things. And I've seen all of our flaws. And they've all been called out in front of the team. We don't hide them. There's going to be a lot of things that get called out. It's going to feel a lot different because sometimes when you win, I think everybody thinks, "Oh, it didn't cost us. We're ok." Well, you don't have that performance today and not have some sort of sickness in your stomach about what you just did.
Like I said, there's guys on our football team that don't own that, they won't be on this football team very long. I don't really care. Like, we're going to play with guys that are tough and love football and are committed to their development and improving as a team, which you can see we have a lot of improvement to do.
We've had a lot of improvement to do. It's just been masked by winning some games, but we haven't played really good football yet in my opinion. We've just found ways to win some games and made some plays but haven't played at a high enough standard.
On Jadan Baugh handling frustration
Jadan was frustrated. I went over to him late in the fourth quarter and put my hand on his hat and said, "Hey, man. This doesn't change how I feel about you. This doesn't change who you are. We all have to own what happened today. And you're a leader on this football team, so it starts with how you handle your business."
Like, how you look in the mirror. It's not like he did anything poor, per se. But it's about everybody in our program having accountability. Look, they did a really good job. They had a good plan. They played really hard. I thought their defensive players flew around. They played with an energy and edge that I'd like for us to play with.
And, it was frustrating for him. I think it was frustrating for all of our guys.
On improving the team's maturity
I think, man, sometimes you can write like a sentence or a page of a story when you win because it like masks a deficiency. When you lose, you're going to write a chapter. We got to learn from this. We got to sit on this a little bit, and we have to see our guys look in the mirror and take the accountability.
And everybody in our program, top to bottom, like I said earlier, starting with me, all of the coaches, the staff, the players, everybody in the building, like, look at it, look into it, own it, don't shy away from it. It sucks. It's not fun. But I expect these guys to respond. I can promise you this. I'm going to do everything in my freakin' power, everything to help them respond. That's my job.
And we're not going to be ok with this. This is not our standard here. And disgusted by it. But we have to help this team grow. That's what our job is. And we need the player leadership to help it grow.
On stopping the run getting away from them
So one of them: we think we got the ball bottled up, but it's not broken the line of scrimmage yet, and too many guys started to pursue over the top of the football when the ball was still behind the line of scrimmage. You have to play through your gap when the ball is still behind the line. If it breaks across the line, you can then flow and pursue over the top. We had too many guys on that one on the backside of the play start to flow over the top and then cut back out the backdoor.
And then the second one: we had gap to outfitted up. It's a basic simple run fit, and one guy got out of his gap. And it's one of the simplest run fits we have in our defensive schematics. But all it takes is one guy to get out, and hats off to them for making a play and exposing it. We weren't where we needed to be.
But, really, other than those two plays, we felt like we were stopping the run. It really felt like both sides were having a hard time running the football, and then we just gave them two gifts to some degree. And, look, good plays by 20. Like, really good plays by him. But we didn't really execute neither.
On when the momentum swung
They capitalized and created scoring opportunities, and we didn't. When they got the ball out of the second half and went down and scored again, that definitely I think that kind of swung the momentum, for sure."
On Aaron Philo missing Duke Clark on the first drive
Duke's the throw there, and he just felt the pressure — he couldn't see Duke. He felt the off-the-edge pressure to make the throw. In practice, that's the throw. When I grabbed him when he was coming off, he was like, "Coach, I couldn't see through the defender to feel comfortable to let the ball loose."
Sometimes, you just got to let it rip, and he'll learn from it. I don't think it was his best. I think early, he missed some things, but, look, he's done a lot of great things for us this year. He's going to bounce back. He's a tough dude. He'll learn from this. He'll grow. He'll compete, and hate it for him. It wasn't his best today. He's played a lot better football through the previous four games, and we just got to get ready to respond.
