Two weeks, two losses for the Florida Gators.
It was not long ago that Jon Sumrall's team was the talk of college football after starting the season with four straight wins — a stretch that included a solid road victory at Auburn and a definitive triumph over Ole Miss in the Swamp. Since then, the Orange and Blue have been blown out by Missouri on the road and South Carolina on homecoming weekend in games that have seen lackluster play on both sides of the ball.
The latest loss has Florida deservedly on USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg's losers list after Week 6.
"After the Gators earned a mammoth win against No. 11 Mississippi, two SEC losses in a row essentially erased their playoff chances heading into games against No. 1 Texas and No. 2
Georgia to end October," Myerberg begins. "Even if making the playoff was already a long shot, the focus now shifts to winning eight games in the regular season. That’s doable, but only if Florida takes care of business in November against Oklahoma, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State."
The Gators will seek to stop the schneid next weekend against the Longhorns, who are coming off a disappointing loss of their own, in Austin. A win over Texas could restore the program's CFP aspirations, but it is a steep hill from here on out.
