Florida has now suffered back-to-back losses this season for the second time after falling, 23-7, to the Oklahoma Sooners.
The reality of the Gators' season is that this team has not been the same since their electric undefeated start through the first four games.
Though the defense had moments of brilliance in Ben Hill Griffin, the offense has not been the same. Third downs were treacherous for the Gators, and the ball couldn't move through the air or even through the ground.
With three games remaining, the focus should be on ending the season on a positive note and securing a bowl appearance in Jon Sumrall's first season.
Here are five key takeaways from Florida’s 23-7 loss to Oklahoma.
Florida's offensive struggles continue
Florida's offense has become a shell of the unit that dominated
opponents during the first month of the season.
After averaging 53.5 points through its first four games, Florida has struggled to consistently move the football against SEC competition. Saturday's seven-point performance marked another disappointing showing for an offense that once looked like one of the conference's most explosive.
Quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. struggled to establish a rhythm through the air, completing just 10 of 22 passes for 133 yards and two interceptions. The Gators' inability to move the ball downfield let Oklahoma focus on limiting the run, making sustained drives increasingly difficult.
With the offense now scoring single digits in consecutive games, Florida must find answers quickly if it hopes to salvage its season.
Third-down struggles derail the Gators
One of Florida's biggest weaknesses Saturday was its inability to extend drives on third down.
The lack of production on early downs frequently put Jones and the offense in difficult situations, forcing the Gators into predictable passing scenarios.
Florida's struggles on third down not only limited scoring opportunities but also forced its defense to stay on the field longer.
Jadan Baugh's limited involvement hurts the offense
Jadan Baugh was touted as the centerpiece of Florida's offense throughout the offseason and rightfully so, but the Gators' star running back has struggled in his ongoing rut.
Baugh finished with just 35 rushing yards on eight carries, although he accounted for Florida's lone touchdown with a 15-yard scoring run in the second quarter.
For an offense that has leaned heavily on its rushing attack, Baugh's limited opportunities were particularly concerning. Florida struggled to establish consistency on the ground, making it difficult to create favorable situations for its young quarterback.
The Gators have been at their best when Baugh is heavily involved and creating opportunities for the passing game. They must create more opportunities for him to be productive.
Florida's defense shows promise despite the loss
While the offense struggled to find answers, Florida's defense provided several encouraging moments against the Sooners.
The Gators generated pressure and disrupted Oklahoma's offensive rhythm, especially by forcing the Sooners to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns.
However, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer still made timely plays, finishing with 207 passing yards and two touchdowns. His ability to extend possessions ultimately proved costly for a Florida defense that received little support from its offense.
Although allowing 23 points was far from ideal, Florida's defense showed enough resistance to keep the game competitive for much of the night.
Bowl eligibility becomes Florida's biggest priority
What began as a promising season with College Football Playoff aspirations has quickly turned into a fight to reach the postseason.
After opening the year with four consecutive victories, Florida has lost four of its last five games, falling to 5-4 overall. The Gators now need at least one victory over their final three opponents to secure bowl eligibility.
For Sumrall, reaching a bowl game in his first season would provide valuable extra practices and a chance to build momentum heading into the offseason.
The Gators may no longer control their postseason ceiling, but they still have a chance to shape how their first season under Sumrall will be remembered.
