Florida football's College Football Playoff hopes remain slim, with the Gators having several areas to address if they hope to make a postseason push.
After the release of the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season, ESPN's Bill Connelly examined the biggest weakness facing each of the committee's top 25 teams and identified Florida's inability to consistently create negative plays as its most concerning flaw.
The Gators (5-3, 3-3 SEC) debuted at No. 24 in the CFP rankings despite struggling to maintain the momentum they established earlier in the season.
According to ESPN's SP+ ratings, Florida ranks 44th nationally, including 33rd on offense and 49th on defense, reflecting a team that has shown flashes but has struggled to produce
consistently.
Florida's offense was among the nation's most explosive units four games into the new season. Earlier in the season, they beat Ole Miss 52-28; however, that production has declined significantly over the past month, and they haven't scored over 30 points since then.
The Gators have averaged just 17.8 points per game over their last four contests, a concerning trend for a team attempting to remain in the playoff conversation.
Despite those struggles, Florida still ranks 23rd nationally in points per drive and sixth in completion rate, suggesting the offense can move the football when it operates efficiently.
The bigger concern, according to ESPN, is the defense's inability to consistently disrupt opposing offenses.
Florida stops just 13.6% of opponents' rushing attempts at or near the line of scrimmage, ranking 131st nationally. The Gators have also intercepted only 1.5% of opposing pass attempts, placing them 105th in the country.
Although Florida's pass rush has shown promise, the unit has not consistently produced enough disruptive plays to offset the offense's recent decline.
The Gators' defensive performance against Georgia offered some encouraging signs, but their 27-8 loss showed how difficult it can be to stay competitive when the offense struggles to score, and the defense cannot consistently create extra possessions.
With Florida sitting at three losses, the margin for error is razor-thin.
ESPN also identified the Gators' upcoming road matchup against Kentucky in Week 11 as their only remaining opponent ranked inside the SP+ top 40.
To strengthen its postseason resume, Florida will need to rediscover its offensive rhythm while generating more negative plays and turnovers defensively.
The talent has been there for Jon Sumrall’s program, but whether Florida can overcome those shortcomings will determine how high the Gators climb in the College Football Playoff race.
